The power of being more present

What does it mean to be more conscious? It does not mean retreating to the mountains and spending your life in meditation. It means diving into your life with intention. It means being fully present as you go about your day. Most people are not fully present in any given moment. Their minds inundate them with thoughts about the past or about the future. Think about the last time you were involved in a conversation with somebody. Were you fully present in the moment and listening to what they were telling you? Or in the back of your mind, were you thinking about what else you needed to do, or about the argument with your loved one that morning?

Being fully present means that when you are performing any activity, that is all you are focused on. Your mind is quiet, and you are aware of only the present moment. This is a powerful state, because when you are fully present in the now moment, you are connected to that infinite Divine intelligence within yourself. And living life from the place of connection to your own Divine intelligence is a beautiful thing! Your response to life comes from the highest vibrational state. Your relationships flourish, your health improves, you are happier and more peaceful. Abundance on all levels begins to pour into your life. This is what it means to live more consciously. It means not living life from the noisy, critical place of the mind. It means falling fully into the heart space and living life from the still, silent place of the heart.

Most people wake up in the morning and begin the mad dash on the hamster wheel. Their days are spent in the activities of modern living – dropping off kids to school, going to work, rushing back to prepare dinner, making sure kids have done their homework, dinner, dishes, TV and bed. And then wake up the next morning and do it all over again and again and again! Everyone has their version of the hamster wheel. I have a client, who is a psychiatrist. He has extreme anxiety and is not functioning well in his day to day life. When I spoke to him, he revealed that he loved to play and write music. When I asked him how much time he spent pursuing his creative passion, he replied, โ€œNoneโ€. His version of the hamster wheel did not allow him any time to actually do something that would fulfill him.

It is no wonder that he had anxiety! He spent his days in the โ€˜doingโ€™ aspects of his life. In the short term, we can all function under stress. But our modern day hamster wheels means that we are constantly functioning under stress. It is important to start being more present and taking time to do things that fulfill our creative aspects. It is when we fill ourselves by doing things that may not be productive in the modern sense of the word, that we are also able to keep functioning in our day to day lives. Otherwise, we find that it becomes harder to keep functioning, when we are not taking the time to fuel ourselves.

So, become more present. Practice quieting the mind. Take the time each day to step off the hamster wheel and do something which fuels your creativity and ignites your passion. And watch all areas of your life evolve!
